A bump stop only works in the last part of suspension travel. When the arm comes up hard, it contacts the bump stop before anything bottoms out, and the bump stop absorbs the impact progressively instead of letting it end in a hard stop.

That is where the ride quality gain comes from: the biggest hits are absorbed instead of passed into the truck, and the rest of the front suspension gets full bottom-out protection.
